3rd Day Sailing | North Similans

Diving in the North SimilansToday you'll have the chance to dive 4 more times. Breakfast and lunch will be served on board in between these. The northern tip of the Similan archipelago offers huge boulder formations available to descend that form swim-through and gullies between the rocks where you'll find both hard and soft corals. At the base of these stones you'll see ribbon eels, mantis shrimps, jacks, surgeonfish and fusiliers, while barracudas swim higher above. Close to Similan Island no. 9 there are enormous flat plains of cauliflower leaf corals and stubbly finger corals, green turtles and black/white banded sea snakes. Further north you'll find the North Point Pinnacle. When visibility is good and currents are gentle, you can start diving from the pinnacle - which starts around the 15 metres deep and goes down to over 50 metres and is favoured by sharks and manta rays. Dinner will be served on board while sailing to Koh Bon.

4th Day Sailing| Koh Bon and Koh Tha Chai

diving in koh bon and koh tha chaiRecently included in the park, the remote islands named Ko Bon and Ko Tachai offer awesome dive sites. Wake up and have breakfast on board before having your first two dives of the day at Koh Bon. Koh Bon features a step-down ridge that carries on to depths of over 45m: its eastern side forms one of the few vertical walls in Thailand while the western side has mushroom-like coral formations, seafans, and schooling fish. Manta rays frequent this dive site, travelling from Bon to Tachai and back again during the diving season from October until May. Leopard sharks are common here as well and, even though the soft corals are not as high-profile as they are in the Similans, their colours are radically different and include shades of turquoise, yellow and blue, besides the more common pinks and purples. Koh Bon pinnacle is just to the north of the ridge. It's a deep rock, stunning to dive but only for experienced divers and when conditions are good. Leopard sharks hang here, but it's also a good place to see smaller critters hiding in the rock. Have lunch on board while sailing to Koh Tha Chai for the 2 dives of the afternoon. Koh Tachai has an offshore underwater ridge that runs perpendicular to the island. Known as "Twin Peaks" this is considered to be one of the finest dives in Thailand for its corals, fans and tropical fish, and for larger animals such as rays, leopard sharks, nurse sharks and hawksbill turtles. Whale sharks and manta rays make an appearance on a regular basis. Koh Tachai also boasts a breathtaking sandy beach on its north-eastern shore with a small ranger station to keep the place clean. It's a great place to hang out and feel like Robinson Crusoe. Have dinner on board while sailing to Richelieu Rock.

5th Day Sailing | Richelieu Rock and Koh Surin

diving richelieu rock and koh surinHave breakfast on board before having 2 more dives at Richieleu Rock. Richelieu Rock is probably the best dive site of all in the area: discovered by diving pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau with the help of local fishermen, this is also one of the best places in the world to dive with whale sharks who are attracted here to feed on the rich planktonic blooms (sightings occur about 10% of the time with February to April being the best time). Richelieu Rock boasts great biodiversity: it consists of 1 main, horse shoe shaped splintered rock pinnacle, with several other smaller rocks around its edges, covered with anemones, sea fans, barrel sponges and soft corals. You can see here tomato anemone fish, white-eyed moray eels, mantis shrimps, yellow boxfish, nurse sharks, manta rays, one metre Malabar groupers, chevron barracuda, frog fish, seahorses, mating cuttlefish and octopus. Lunch will be served on board while Sailing to Koh Surin. Ko Surin Tai (in the south) features beautiful and diverse coral reefs and famous diving sites to see sea turtles. Ko Surin Nuea (in the north) is surrounded by coral reefs in several bays, some more than 300 m. wide that also contain numerous corals before sloping to a depth of 20-30 m. The coral reefs here suffer little in the way of strong current or wave action and provide a suitable place to snorkel. Have 2 more dives here: after that, if you wish, you can also follow the nature trail at Hat Mai Ngam which links many diverse ecosystems ranging through Evergreen Forest, Beach Forest, and Mangrove Forest to an "underwater forest", the large coral reef. Have dinner on board while sailing back to the central Similans.

6th Day Sailing| Central Similan Islands

Diving in the Central Similan IslandsWake up to the sound of the ocean before going to explore the dive sites of the Central Similan Islands: four more dives are scheduled for today. This area boasts some stunning coral bommies, table corals, staghorn corals, and huge granite boulders sinking deep into the ocean with spectacular swim-throughs. Some of the fish life you can expect to see here are lionfish, the colourful Oriental sweetlips and the gorgeous but less commonly seen clown triggerfish. Moray eels, leopard sharks, boxfish, lyretail grouper and the gorgeous powderblue surgeonfish are also commonly spotted in this area as are butterflyfish, bannerfish and Java rabbitfish. Dinner will be served on board as you sail back to Phuket.
