Phuket Vegetarian Festival
September 27 - October 5 2011
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a colourful event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, that celebrates the Thai/Chinese community's belief that abstinence from meat and alcohol during this period of the year will bestow good health and fortune upon the participants.
The origins of the festival are unclear: some says it originated from a wandering Chinese opera group who fell ill with malaria while performing on the island and who were miraculously healed through a strictly vegetarian diet. They legendarily held the first festival to thank the gods for their recovery.
This year the Festival goes from the 27th of September to the 5th of October: during these 9 days local residents of Chinese ancestry will observe a vegetarian diet while sacred rituals will be performed at various Chinese shrines and temples in town to invoke the gods. These rituals are the most fascinating (but sometimes scary) aspect of the festival: fire walking, body piercing and other acts of self mortification are undertaken by the "Ma Song", devotees who are believed to act as mediums of the gods, shifting evil from individuals onto themselves, bringing luck to the community. It is believed that the gods will protect them from harm, with little blood or scarring resulting from such mutilation acts. Colourful street processions and events will take place in town each day of the festival with participants walking in trance, running across burning coals, or climbing ladders of sharp blades. The show is mesmerizing (but not for the faint of heart!) and specially prepared, delicious vegetarian cuisine can be sampled at street stalls in town.
This is a unique event, strongly suggested to anybody who's fascinated by witnessing traditional festivals. And this year it falls during the Chinese October Holidays: match your well deserved beach relax with some culture discovery. Ask us more to know how to participate to this festival.
